Where’s the Animation?!?

You may be wondering what all this talk of cakes is all about, and why is it on a site primarily about animation? And to be honest you’d be right to ask…

Let me start by saying my blog will continue to be a place where I answer peoples questions, whatever those questions are about. Lately I’ve been asked quite a few questions about making cakes, and so that’s what I’ve been posting about. This blog, as well as me posting what I’m interested in at the time, will also be somewhat reactionary, allowing me to respond to pretty much anything people tell me they’re interested in, if I have something to say about it.

I’m not really at liberty to discuss or show much of the animation work I’m doing just at the moment, but that will soon change. So if you’re waiting for more of that sort of thing then please be patient. It won’t be too long now.

Speaking of which, you may have noticed I’ve taken down the Charley Bear pages temporarily. Don’t worry, we’re just doing some re-tooling, a few adjustments, before re-announcing it to the world. There is a lot happening for Charley at the moment, and all will be revealed very soon.

Soon I will be releasing some video and written LightWave 3D training to bridge the gap between what was and what is now. LightWave has recently had some additions that are definitely worth talking about.

I’ve also recently revisited X-Men: ROA, and have some cool stuff to share. But I’ll leave that for another entry.

So let me finish by saying, thanks for your interest, and please let me know at any time if there’s something you particularly want to know, or topics you’re especially interested in. I’m happy to talk about what you want me to talk about.

  2. Your creations are incredible. I thank you for the inspiration. You are someone I would like to be like. I was searching for tutorials on feathers, and found your bird…. Oh, what an absolutely beautiful bird. Since visiting your website I will be looking for your books and anything else you put out. I am hoping to someday be able to start making money doing some of this kind of stuff.
Thanks Again! You are truly awesome!

  4. Thanks very much Penny,

Please let me know if I can help out in any way. I hope to find time soon to post some video tutorials here, expanding on, continuing, and updating from where my books left off…

  6. Hello Jonny, I’m currently teaching myself 3D animation, so far your books are the most comprehensive (so thank you!) I’ve been able to understand and follow along, though not do as neat a job as you. However, I’ve reached a point in volum 2: Rigging and Animation, that has me stumped (nothing from your end, something I must be doing wrong) When I go to place the first bone (or any bone for that matter) I click and drag, but the drag doesn’t quite work… not in any way I can see. It is doing something, it seems when I turn the bone on, i can then see it’s length (I first noticed under the item properties window, that depending on how far i tried to drag it would be differnt lengths, so dragging was doing something) however, when creating a bone, its not active (rightly so) I can’t see how it is placed until i release the mouse button, activate it, then try to move it using the editing tools… while it’s active… Is there some setting that I must have on (or off) that would have been a possible default. (I haven’t changed anything expect what your tutorial said, and nothing obvious jumps out and says “Here!” )
Sorry for the long winded question, but I’m so anxious to get started! :) Thank you again for your wonderful books. (P.S. Skelegons work, and when I convert to bones, they also work… but I was hoping to follow your tutorial with bones, it seems a lot more powerful and easier to back up with bones- also I’m using Version 9, i figured it would be close enough to get a good basis to start with) Thanks, Sadie

  8. Thanks Sadie, I’m really glad you’re finding my books helpful.

All of the steps in the books can be followed using LW9. The only thing I can think of is that your video card isn’t displaying the bones properly. You should be able to see the bones when you draw them, and before they’re activated, with dotted outlines. Maybe contact Newtek with your hardware specs and problem to see how it can be resolved.
