Finally… Some New Cakes

It’s been a while between posts, and even longer between cakes. Since my last post my family and I spent 6 months in China, and all sorts of other fun stuff has been happening.

I’ve been so busy I haven’t even had a chance to make many cakes, only 2 since making Elmo and Rani a couple of years ago. In December 2009 I made a Captain Mack cake, and December 2010 just after getting back home from China I made this Ariel cake from The Little Mermaid.

Your Cakes are amazing, but I guess everybody tells you that.

Im going to try and attempt the ariel cake for my niece next month. Do you have any other photos or information on making the ariel cake please.

Any help would be gratly appreciated. I wouldnt know where to start. Where have you put your supports etc..

    Thanks Christina,

I don’t have any more photos unfortunately. There is just a single support dowel going up through the rock, her body and her head, with a small platform to support her head. The body, head and hair were made from rice crispies, but her body and the bottom half of her hair also could have been cake. The bottom part of her tail is also rice crispies.

    Good luck :)

Thanks so much for replying. Was the Dowel connected to the cake board or was it just put straight through the cake. Also can you remember what size cake board you used??

    Thanks again

I was asking about the aerial cake. thanks

I attached the dowel to the board, but you may get away with just putting it through the cake for this one. The cake board I used was about 35cm in diameter.

    Hi Jonny,

Don’t suppose you have made an Eeyore cake? I made your Elmo cake for my daughters 2nd birthday which was a hit (nothing on yours though) and would love some instructions for an Eeyore version. Must admit that during the making of the Elmo cake, I did have a number of issues with the rice crispies not holding up, however next time I will try to heat to higher temperature.

Any suggestions much appreciated as your cakes and instructions are of the highest quality.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Amanda,

I haven’t made an Eeyore cake, but there’s a great one here for inspiration. If you have a design in mind and want some help planning it let me know.

I had trouble with the rice crispies on Elmo’s legs, they didn’t want to stay together. I think the trick to rice crispies is to build up in layers rather than try to put the whole lot together. Trying to keep them together while keeping the right shape can be very painful :P But the legs are fancier than they need to be too. It would be much easier to have his legs straight along the ground instead of his knees up like that.

    Hi Jonny!

I just came across your blog by looking at some pictures you have on flickr and I really like your work either animation or cakes!…. It is funny because I am a Media Arts and Animation mayor and I love to bake!!!! I started making cakes since I was 12 and done some small 3d cakes but after reading all the instructions you have I think I am up for other challenges.

I wanted to ask you though, in your elmo instructions you sugeest to use the cream cheese icing for the crumb coat, and I was wondering if you use the butter cream icing for the fur or the top coat?

Also, I think you used hanging wire for the structures when you did the chipettes, but i wanted to confirm if it is that the best wire to hold the RKT? If doing smaller figurines of course…

    Hi Sofia,

I used the butter cream icing for the fur which is the top coat.

Having done that I would go with thinner wire next time for smaller things like the Chipettes. I used 14 guage (2mm) for the Chipettes, but it was too thick to manipulate easily at that size, so next time I’ll try 18 or 20 guage.

Best of luck with your animation major :)
